Because the Sun must also be low in the sky, near the horizon, late afternoon is the best time to look for a rainbow if the day has been sunny with a few short rain showers or thunderstorms. A rainbow appears in the part of the sky opposite the Sun. Rainbows can sometimes be spotted in the mist of waterfalls and in the sky during a rain shower when the Sun is still shining. The smog is a secondary pollutant produced by the photochemical reactions of certain air pollutants, which usually come from vehicles with internal-combustion engines and industrial activities. While this blue-tinged gas benefits the atmosphere, ozone forms a layer of chemical smog at ground level. The ozone layer is located between 9 and 25 miles (15 and 40 kilometers) up in the atmosphere, and it is produced by the interaction of the Sun’s radiation with certain air molecules. Ozone, or three molecules of oxygen (O 3, compared with the O 2 that humans breathe), is a blanket in the atmosphere that covers Earth.
